The One Fight I Must Lose; Genesis 32:22-31
Most of us were taught that we must fight to get ahead in life. We learned from an early age that we have to sacrifice and struggle in order to achieve our life goals. Doctor Gainey introduces us to the concept, however, that there is one fight in life that we must be willing to lose. When we wrestle against God and His truths, we must learn to submit to His will and His way. We must be willing to lose in order that we might win.
Genesis 32:24 (NIV) ~ So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.

Be Careful of the Company I Keep; 2 Corinthians 6:11-18; 7:1
In psychology, experts debate whether particular aspects of behavior are a product of nature—characteristics we inherit or genetics—or nurture—acquired or learned influences. Doctor Gainey focuses on the nurture side of the spectrum, teaching us that our environment and the people we hang out with can have a direct impact on our Christian walk.
2 Corinthians 7:1 (NIV) ~ Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

The Greatest Enemy of Future Success is Past Success; Ezra 3:1-13
In our humanness, we—and our past successes—can be the biggest impediment to achieving success in the future. While we can learn from our past, the future will be much different so we must plan for and adapt to the changing environment. Doctor Gainey gives us four salient points for putting the past in our past and achieving success in the future.
Ezra 3:12 (NIV) ~ But many of the older priests and Levites and family heads, who had seen the former temple, wept aloud when they saw the foundation of this temple being laid, while many others shouted for joy.

The Hard Part of Love; Romans 12:9-21
It's easy for us to love those who return love to us in kind. But what about those who are different from us... those who believe differently than us? What about our enemies. That's where displaying love can get difficult. Doctor Gainey guides us through those hard opportunities to demonstrate love.

Life Through the Spirit; Romans 8:1-17; 26-2
We hear the Word of God in our worship services, we read it in the Bible, and we take classes and studies to imprint it in our brains, but how do we apply it in our everyday lives? The Word of God is meant to be used, applying it to all our thoughts, actions, and decisions. Doctor Gainey walks us through how the Holy Spirit gives us the power to overcome and conquer our own flesh and begin living lives that look more and more like Jesus.
Romans 8:1-2 (NIV) ~ Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Stop Listening to the Preacher; Jeremiah 23:16-32
It may sound counterintuitive, but there are times when you should stop listening to the preacher. The Bible—the living and breathing Word of God—is not open to selective editing. It is not open to glorifying the messenger over the source. It is not open to twisting in way that favors personal happiness over the harsh reality of truth. This is a powerful message everyone should hear. Doctor Gainey delivers an exceptional truth, advising us of six situations when we should turn away from a preacher... to tune them out and purge the message.
Jeremiah 23:16a (NIV) ~ This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you..."

Words + Actions = Improvement; Luke 5:1-11
We've all heard the expression that actions speak louder than words. But have you heard that actions also speak better with Words? That is to say that taking the right action takes an understanding of the Word of God. No matter how educated we are... regardless of our position or role in the church... we all must remain open to learning and diving deeper into God's direction for our lives. Doctor Gainey delivers a powerful sermon to kick off the New Year.

Grandmas of Christmas—Decisions and Consequences; Matthew 1:1-6
We all have skeletons in our closet... those truths, things, or people we tuck away and hope never see the light of day. As Doctor Gainey points out during this third week of Advent, Jesus had skeletons in His family closet too. The difference is that He didn't hide them away and God used those circumstances to teach us and grow us in our walk with Him. What skeletons do you have tucked away that you can deal with today?

Doctor Gainey outlines four simple points that highlight our need to join God's work now... discovering and using the blessings He already provided.

What in Hell Do You Want?; Luke 16:19-31
Here's a difficult truth. When our lives here on earth end—something none of us can escape—we face two possible eternities: life with God in Heaven or life with Satan in hell. Eternity means forever, meaning there are no second chances, and it's the decisions we make today that determine which eternity we face tomorrow. In that light, Doctor Gainey poses the question: What is it that you place ahead of God today that makes an eternity in hell worth it tomorrow? In other words, what is there in hell that you want?
